Whether or not your scar removal will be painful can depend on the type of scar being treated, the method being used, and your pain tolerance.

For example, injections can feel like a strong ‘prick’ on some keloids. However, if the scar tissue has hardened, more pressure may be needed to insert the needle, and that may feel more painful. However, this type of procedure is not so painful as to require anaesthetic. It is tolerable for most people, and quick.

Pain from lasers can depend on the intensity of the machine settings being used. And, those settings will be determined by the type of scar being treated. Some instances may call for anaesthetic or numbing cream.

The most painful type of scar revision would be surgical removal. This is especially for the larger treatment areas (it’s not so bad with the tiny scars, like acne scars). The healing time with surgery is also longer than with other methods.

Raised, hypertrophic scars and keloids can form for a number of reasons, on multiple parts of the body.

Generally, these types of scars are the body’s reaction to a skin trauma (i.e. a wound, or cut). In trying to heal after an abrasion, too much collagen is produced, creating excessive fibrous tissues where the original scar was. They can form over a long period of time; sometimes they don’t appear until years after the initial injury.

The size of the scars or keloids you get can be based on genetics. Some people are simply more prone to getting keloids, for example, than others. This is why, if you know your body has this tendency, it’s good to notify your medical practitioner before undergoing any invasive procedure – even if it’s only with needles. The doctor can then attempt to prevent raised scars, and not just to treat them.

One might naturally think: let’s just cut it out! While this may work for some types of scars, it won’t for others. A body that forms excessive tissues in response to wounding is already prone to keloids. So, surgery could be counterintuitive in many cases. A new scar will form, thus possibly causing an even bigger keloid.

We carry multiple forms of scar treatments specially for this reason: not all scars will respond the same way to various treatments, and this can be based on the specific person we’re dealing with. The last thing we’d want is to make your situation worse. So, it’s important to consult with an experienced provider when seeking scar reduction.
