We offer natural-looking, Vancouver lip injections at our Surrey clinic, performed by a qualified, experienced doctor or nurse. We offer this service alongside our other dermal fillers and wrinkle relaxers, which take special training to administer. In fact, our lead doctor sometimes trains others on these procedures.
Our clinic is a highly regarded one, and has been for over 20 years. It has definitely been worth the drive for clients from all over the Lower Mainland. Our patients stem from Vancouver, Surrey, Delta (Tsawwassen and Ladner), White Rock, South Surrey, Cloverdale, Aldergrove, Langley, North Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, New Westminster, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and even as far as Abbotsford, Chilliwack or Bellingham, USA.
When it comes to lip fillers, we’re a top choice in the area, with several qualifications behind our name, which you can read about here.
Why get lip fillers? What’s the craze about? Well, it started long before Kylie Jenner’s lips got so popular. Creating full, thick lips has long been a desired beauty trend in aesthetic medicine.
Some people are born with thin lips. However, as we age, we all lose fat, moisture and volume in our entire face; our lips are no exception. For both these reasons, people seek out lip augmentation procedures.
While fat transfers and surgical, synthetic implants are expensive and dangerous, injectable lip fillers have taken over as the solution-of-choice for this area of the body. Using very low-risk substances, temporary dermal fillers can define the cupid’s bow and vermilion border (the upper and lower lip lines). With special, precise techniques, our doctors can create virtually any lip shape you want.
It all starts with a consultation at our clinic, to evaluate your case, and learn more about your goals. We encourage you to book today!
What is there to love about lip fillers?
Lip fillers offer a non-surgical, affordable way to enhance lips. They last around 5 to 6 months (if opting for a hyaluronic acid based solution). However, they cost a fraction of what a surgical, invasive procedure would cost.
These days, you can get safe, lip augmentation in Vancouver without downtime or the risks associated with surgery. Not to mention: surgery would mean you’d have to live with the results, even if you don’t like them. This is not the case with lip injections, which are temporary. You can even change your look from time to time, if you prefer different sized lips.
Hyaluronic acid, a commonly used substance for lip augmentation, is a very low-risk ingredient. It is unlikely to cause any adverse side effects. It is also dissolvable, should you not like the results of your lip augmentation procedure at our Surrey clinic.
What solutions do you offer for lip fillers in Surrey?
To plump the lips using lip filler, we typically use the Juvéderm® brand line. The brand itself offers a series of hyaluronic acid (HA) gel fillers, made for different parts of the face, décolleté or hands.
The Juvéderm® product that is made for the lips is called VOLBELLA®. So, you may have heard of this procedure being called a VOLBELLA® lip enhancement.
Juvéderm® is a comparable HA brand to others you may have heard of. These include Restylane, Teosyal, Ovita, Revanesse, Perlane, Belotero, Captique, Prevelle, Hylaform and others. Some may not be available in Canada, by the way.
The reason we stick to Juvéderm® is that it is known to last the longest. It gives our patients the most ‘bang for buck’ for this procedure. We can also safely use it in combination with other injectables, for a non-surgical face lift.
More than hyaluronic acid lip injections
While HA lip fillers are the most common, we’re not limited to using just this type of ingredient for shaping the vermillion border. We can also do the popular, “Botox® lip flip” using, of course, Botox®. This helps to turn your lips slightly outward, to give the illusion of fullness.
Will my lips look natural? Can I choose how I want my lips to look?
Yes and yes! You can have natural-looking or very full lips; it’s up to you! Some people love the exaggerated lip look. Others want a subtle ‘lift’ and ‘plump.’ Some want a defined cupid’s bow. Some just want a raise, curl or lip wrinkle filler.
It really depends on you and, of course, the quality of communication you have with the person doing the injecting. Thankfully, our doctors are highly trained and experienced at all sorts of dermal fillers. They can even suggest common trends. And, they are good listeners, too.
The idea that your lips will look totally ‘done’ is an old concept you needn’t be afraid of. In fact, you may have seen people who have had lip filler, but didn’t even know it. The cosmetic industry has adapted a lot over the years. We can now provide very precise results, with specific injection points. This is the case with all dermal fillers and wrinkle relaxers. The ‘frozen’ and ‘swollen’ look is mostly over (except for those who want it).
Do lip injections hurt?
Lip injections are not painless, but they can pinch a little, yes. The good news is that their formulas come with lidocaine, an anaesthetic that works very quickly (like the ‘freezing’ you get at the dentist).
Plus, our doctors know how to avoid ‘pain spots,’ to keep you comfortable. Most people don’t even flinch when getting lip fillers.
How do lip injections work?
Most practitioners who offer lip injections do so with a special formula of hyaluronic acid. This is as close to a ‘natural lip injection’ as you can get (many people wonder about this, probably because paraffin and silicone were used as lip implants in the past). Hyaluronic acid is a sugar that is naturally found in our bodies. It binds to water, to create the suppleness in our skin.
The lips, in particular, are prone to drying out because they don’t have the sweat or oil glands that are present in our surrounding skin, to balance moisture. This can cause them to shrink over time. In fact, lips are merely a thin area of skin without much melanin in them (i.e. colour). They appear red because blood vessels are easily visible through their thin, transparent layers. In dark coloured persons, they may not be as red, because more melanin is present.
By adding thick, heavy forms of hyaluronic acid to your lips, we can bring back, or add in the volume that is missing. This is much different from the hyaluronic acid that is found in many over-the-counter cosmetics.
With our Vancouver “Botox® lip flip,” a neuromodulator is not injected into the lips (this is important to know – no one should be doing this). It is injected above the lips, to contract the muscle in that area. This then achieves the desired effect of turning your lips outward.
During the procedure, a doctor will learn about the type of lip shape you’re after. When it comes time to inject the lip filler, you’ll feel small pricks around your mouth from blunt needles. This is a pain-reducing step. Afterwards, the doctor will start insertions to distribute the product in different areas. Based on our experience, we use special techniques to ensure the lips look symmetrical, smooth and just the way you want them.
You will be disinfected with alcohol before, during and after the procedure. A doctor always has an assistant to help with this at our clinic. You will be advised on aftercare when the procedure is complete.
How long do lip fillers and injections last?
Lip fillers from injectable hyaluronic acid solutions last around 6 months. This is a bit shorter than when they are used in the face, because the lips are very mobile.
Botox® used for a “lip flip” may last 3 – 4 months.
In the end, the length of time any injectable can last will depend on how your body reacts to it. For some people, injectables last longer than expected, while for others, they dissipate sooner. There is no way to know in advance. We can only give rough timelines.
Are your Vancouver lip injections safe? What about side effects?
Risks or side effects from lip fillers, in general, are very rare. You may be swollen, tender and red for a few days, due to the injections themselves. But this will subside, and you’ll see your newly shaped lips soon after.
You should also not drink alcohol or take blood-thinning medications for at least a week before and after the procedure. This can cause bruising.
The most important factor in keeping you safe during this procedure is going with a highly qualified practitioner who knows what they are doing. Injecting the wrong type of hyaluronic acid product, for instance, can be problematic. Injecting too little or too much gel can also cause misshaping. Hitting a nerve, or going too deep can be unnecessarily painful.
At our Vancouver-area skin clinic, only licensed doctors and nurses do any kind of injecting. They are also specially trained for lip augmentation (it’s not like you can just poke an area where you want more volume – the facial anatomy under your skin has to be considered).
Before your lip filler procedure, we will ask you a series of questions in a consultation. It will be very important to let us know about your entire health history, including allergies or medications you take, even if you think they are not related to the procedure. We will let you know if you are not eligible for lip fillers (though, this would be rare). We will also let you know a full list of potential side effects.
You should not receive certain dermal fillers if you are allergic to lidocaine (the anaesthetic commonly used in these products). However, if you know you are allergic to lidocaine, please let us know before your consultation, in case we have other solutions on hand.
You must be of legal age to receive lip fillers.
As a last note on this topic, we will say it is possible that a gel filler under your lips can move in the first days after injection (such as from sleeping on it too heavily, or rubbing it, etc.). For that reason, please do not touch, rub or itch the area, and do sleep on your back. If this happens, whatever you do – please don’t try to shape it yourself! Let us work on that. We will be here to help, and we can address the issue, if need be.
What is the cost of lip augmentation at your clinic?
The cost of lip fillers will depend on your specific case, and your goals. Ultimately, we will need to calculate price based on the amount of product we need to use, to achieve your desired effect, and the time it will take. Some people opt for a so-called, ‘mini lip injection’ procedure, because they want something subtle, on lips that are already thick. This will, of course, cost much less than a so-called, ‘Kylie lip job’ if you are starting out with very thin lips.
The best way to find out the price of lip fillers at our Surrey clinic, is to come in for a consultation. This will be a first step, regardless, since we will need to learn about you, and your health history, before the procedure.
We do mention starting prices for Juvéderm® and Botox® on their respective pages on our website (click the aforementioned links for more info). However, these are not meant to be final quotes, by any means. Please take them as just a guide.
