Mole assessment before removal

Thinking About Mole Removal in Surrey? Start Here

Maybe it’s a mole you’ve had for years that catches every time you shave. Maybe it’s the first thing you notice in photos, even when nobody else seems to see it. Whatever brings you here, it’s reasonable to want to know whether it can be removed and what your skin might look like afterwards.

At BC Laser & Skincare, we offer mole removal consultations in Surrey to help you understand your options. Before deciding how to remove a spot, we need to understand what it is. That assessment guides everything that comes next.

First let us take a closer look

Most moles are harmless. Still, a mole that’s changing, itching, bleeding or looking different from your other moles deserves medical attention. If something looks suspicious, investigating it takes priority over cosmetic removal. 1

Tell us when you first noticed it, whether it has changed and if you’ve tried any treatments on it. An older photo can be useful if you’re struggling to describe a difference. You don’t need to decide for yourself whether the change is significant before seeking advice.

Is laser always the best way to remove a mole

Laser may be the option you’ve heard most about, but it isn’t right for every mole. We consider laser, electrosurgical and surgical approaches according to the lesion and your assessment. Read more about mole removal here. 2

Surgical removal may involve cutting out the mole or using a shave technique, and some procedures need stitches. It also allows removed tissue to be examined under a microscope when needed. That’s especially important if there’s uncertainty about the diagnosis. 3

If you came in hoping for laser and we recommend another approach, we’ll explain why. A suspicious, undiagnosed spot shouldn’t simply be destroyed with a cosmetic treatment. Getting the diagnosis right helps us choose the appropriate care.

The question almost everyone wants answered

Will there be a scar? Any removal method can leave one. Even when skin heals well, you may notice a small change in colour or texture where the mole used to be. Its size, location and depth, the removal technique and your healing response all affect what that mark might look like. 2

This matters particularly when a mole is on your face. Tell us if scarring is your biggest concern. We’ll talk through the cosmetic trade-off so you can decide whether removal feels worthwhile. You may decide you’re comfortable leaving a harmless mole alone, and that’s a valid choice too.

What happens while the skin heals

Aftercare depends on the procedure, including whether you have stitches or a dressing. We’ll explain how to look after the area and what follow-up is needed. Before you leave, make sure you’re clear about when you can use makeup or skincare near the site and return to activities such as swimming.

If the area isn’t healing as expected or a removed spot grows back, get in touch for advice and assessment. Resist the temptation to try a home removal product or cut the spot off yourself. That can cause infection or scarring and may delay the diagnosis of a skin cancer. 3

A few common mole removal questions

Does a raised mole mean something is wrong?

Not necessarily. A harmless mole can be raised and catch on clothing or a razor. Height alone doesn’t tell us what a spot is. Its appearance, history and any changes all matter. 1

What if the spot is red rather than brown?

It may be a different type of growth. For example, a cherry angioma is a small growth made up of blood vessels. We can assess the spot before discussing treatment. You can also read about red spots and bumps here. 4

Can I have it removed at my first appointment?

Let us know what you’re hoping for when you book. We need to examine the spot first, and you may need further assessment or a separate treatment appointment. We can also explain the proposed cost before you commit.
