You remember the question halfway home: “Was I supposed to ask about my workout?” Then you search online and find five different answers. Aftercare should not leave you piecing together instructions from strangers.
If you are planning an appointment for Botox in Surrey, make aftercare part of the conversation before any treatment. Ask for instructions for the exact product and procedure you receive, and keep them somewhere easy to find.
Can I exercise afterwards?
Tell your physician what you have planned, whether that is a walk, a gym class, a run or a physically demanding work shift. Ask when you can return to those activities and whether there are any specific restrictions in your case.
Recommendations you find online may describe different products, different procedures or a different patient’s circumstances. Follow your treating clinician’s written advice, and contact them if an instruction is unclear.
What about skincare, makeup and touching the area?
Avoid rubbing or massaging injection sites. Ask your physician when and how to resume your usual skincare and makeup, especially if your routine includes devices, facial massage or treatments that put pressure on the skin.
If you have a facial, laser appointment or another injectable procedure booked, mention it before you leave. The treating clinicians can advise you on appropriate spacing rather than leaving you to combine separate aftercare lists yourself.
Should I change my medication?
Do not stop prescribed medicines, including blood thinners, without advice from the clinician responsible for them. Let your injector know about your medications and supplements before treatment. If you have a question afterwards, contact the appropriate clinician rather than following a blanket instruction from a blog.
What if I notice bruising or swelling?
Local redness, tenderness, swelling and bruising can occur after injections. Headache and unwanted weakness in a nearby muscle, including a drooping eyelid or brow, are also possible. This is not a complete list of risks, and the product’s patient information is important.
Contact your treating clinician about symptoms that concern you, especially if they are worsening or do not match the instructions you were given. Describe when they started and how they have changed. Do not assume every new symptom is routine.
Which symptoms need urgent medical attention?
Seek immediate medical care if you develop difficulty breathing, swallowing or speaking after a botulinum toxin injection. For a medical emergency in Canada, call 911. Do not wait for a social-media reply or a routine clinic callback.
Canadian product information warns that toxin effects can spread beyond the injection site. Serious symptoms can occur hours to weeks after treatment, so tell the healthcare professional about your recent injection.
When should I book a follow-up?
Ask your physician when they want to review you and what that appointment involves. The appropriate timing depends on the product and your situation. Confirm whether a review is included in the quoted fee.
If you have a question before the planned review, get in touch. A follow-up appointment date is not a reason to delay reporting a concern. Likewise, do not arrange additional injections elsewhere before discussing your recent treatment with the clinicians involved.
A simple before-you-leave checklist
Make sure you know the product name and treatment date, have your written aftercare instructions, understand the follow-up plan and have the right contact number. Ask the clinician to repeat anything that was difficult to take in during the appointment.
