Vancouver Xeomin Cosmetic™ injections for frown lines – an alternative to Botox® and Dysport™ (in Surrey)

The primary usefulness of Vancouver Xeomin™ injections, compared to the brand’s competitors, is that its patients are far less likely to form antibodies against it. This is because it lacks extra proteins used to adapt the main ingredient. Those extra proteins are what the body can become desensitized to. When that happens to a frequent patient of say, Botox^® or Dysport™, the wrinkle-smoothing effects start to lag. Those patients will no longer be good candidates for those brands. That’s where Xeomin™ comes in, as an alternative – one that patients are more likely to respond to in such cases.

Right now, as far as cosmetic treatments go, Xeomin™ is approved for use on glabellar lines. That is, the vertical frown lines some people get between their eyebrows. However, doctors and nurses may also use Xeomin™ for other wrinkle treatments, such as on crow’s feet or smile lines around the eyes.

Xeomin™ is also approved to treat medical conditions relating to muscle spasms. These include blepharospasm, cervical dystonia or spasticity in the hands and arms. These conditions can also be treated with Botox^®, which has been around much longer. As a result, many injectors are more accustomed to using it (Xeomin™ is prepared and injected differently). The making of Xeomin™ starts with the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. This is used to extract a protein called, botulinum toxin type A. The end result is an adaptation called, incobotulinumtoxinA, which undergoes extra purification to remove any other proteins that surround the main molecules. Because of its pure form, Xeomin™ can be called a “naked injectable” by some.

IncobotulinumtoxinA is slightly different than onabotulinumtoxinA, which sells under the brand name, Botox^®. It’s also different than abobotulinumtoxinA, which sells under the brand, Dysport™. In essence these other brands simply contain different additive proteins, to adjust the way the neuromodulator will behave, once injected (i.e. how easily it spreads under the skin).

In its practical application, Xeomin™ essentially disables muscle contractions by targeting the nerves contained within them. This then gives the appearance of skin that is smoothed over, in places where formerly, permanent lines had formed due to years of making facial expressions.

As the skin ages, it loses elasticity as well, which multiplies the problem of frown lines from facial expressions. However, Xeomin™ does not target the skin’s elasticity issue; it merely prevents the movement of muscles where frown lines exist. This gives the face a tighter look, temporarily.

During a treatment session, you’ll be asked to make facial expressions, so the doctor or nurse can study your facial anatomy. Dots may be drawn on your face, so the doctor or nurse knows where to inject. A thin needle will be used, and the experience is not that painful for most people. No anaesthetic is required.

The precision of Xeomin™ injection spots, as well as their angles, is important for effectiveness, and safety. Dosing is also very important, since Xeomin™ travels more quickly out of its syringe, compared to other similar products. This product is also prepared differently by the injector, and has a limited shelf-life. Again, for these reasons and more, we’d stress the importance of only allowing a trained physician or nurse to perform these treatments, at a quality clinic.

Vancouver Xeomin™ injections are a temporary treatment for wrinkles. In general, its effects can last around 3 to 4 months. However, for some people, it is less, and for others a bit longer. When the wrinkles that have been treated with Xeomin™ come back, you’ll need to come in for another injection, to maintain results.

Extensive downtime with Xeomin™ is rare. Most commonly, people experience headache, bruising, swelling or itching in the treatment area. That said, it’s also common that people return to their normal activities immediately after a treatment session.

To avoid bruising, we’d ask that at least 10 days prior to your injection, you avoid the use of any blood thinners. This includes over the counter medication. However, if you need your medication for health reasons, it’s best to speak to a doctor or nurse about your plans for Xeomin™ injections first.

If you get itchy at the injection site, you should not rub or scratch the area. This is important, since it can affect the way Xeomin™ is intended to work over time. The best thing to do in this case, would be to come back into our clinic, so we can take a look for you.

You also should not apply heat to the injected area for at least a week after treatment. This can lessen the effects of Xeomin™.

While it’s true that botulinum toxin can cause more severe side effects, these are very rare. The form of the neurotoxin used for cosmetic purposes is highly diluted. However, you should know that yes, there can be more serious risks with this treatment. If you experience any reactions other than minor bruising or swelling, you should contact us right away, or go to an emergency room.

During your initial, required consultation at our clinic, it will be important that you reveal your entire health history to us, including any allergies or medications you are taking. This includes information you may feel is not related. And, keep in mind that, if you had Botox^®, Dysport™ or other dermal injections in the past, this may not mean you are safe to be injected with Xeomin™.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women, or minors, should not be administered Xeomin™ injections.
