Millions of people suffer from migraines, and many of them suffer from chronic migraines. Migraines often attack without notice and prevent you from living your life to its fullest. What few sufferers know about is a new treatment for migraines: Botox. Botox is no longer just for getting rid of wrinkles, it’s now becoming a prime way to treat migraines. As easy as walking into our Greater Vancouver office or calling us to set up an appointment, you can receive treatment to rid yourself of painful and interrupting migraines.
But how does it work? The exact science behind the treatment is somewhat of a mystery. Using Botox as a migraine treatment happened almost mistakenly as Botox receivers who had migraines noticed over time that their migraines were less severe and less often the more they had Botox injections. Botox is said to work by blocking certain brain chemicals from releasing, and therefore they block certain nerves and muscles from moving. Some have insisted that a reason could simply be that Botox prevents the nerves that alert your brain that there is a pain from moving, and the muscles and nerves relax so you are less sensitive to pain.
Some patients will feel relief immediately and that relief may last for several weeks (up to 12 weeks), while others will need a more constant treatment plan, with more frequent visits. Keeping a headache journal will also help to aid in your treatment.
Using Botox to treat migraines is not unlike receiving Botox for cosmetic purposes. The difference is minimal. While the ingredient is the same for both purposes, the Botox you receive for migraines is diluted and given in multiple injection sites on your head and neck.
If you’re hesitant to begin a Botox treatment plan for your migraines, that’s okay. Please contact us and we’ll walk you through the process, taking care to answer any and all questions you may have.
