Our clinic offers AviClear™ for Vancouver laser acne treatments (in Surrey). AviClear™ is the first Health Canada and FDA-cleared device for treating acne long-term, whether it is mild, moderate or severe.

In a clinical study, 92% of patients saw gradually improving results from this treatment after 12 months. This makes it a viable, safe alternative to prescription or chemical acne treatments, such as antibiotics or isotretinoin (i.e. Accutane, a last-resort drug to treat acne).

AviClear™ is an award-winning acne treatment, having won “2022 Best in Industry Technology Innovation” from The Aesthetic Awards and the 2022 Cosmopolitan “Holy Grail Acne Award.” It was also listed as the Elle “Feature of Beauty Winner” and in the Well+Good “Editor’s Choice” list in 2022, the year it launched.

What is there to love about the AviClear™ acne laser?

AviClear vs other acne treatments chart - available in Vancouver in Surrey

The AviClear™ acne laser is a revolutionary breakthrough in the treatment of acne. We love it because:

  • It requires no drugs, prescriptions or chemicals (including topical creams) to control the production of sebum (i.e. oil in the skin, which is a primary cause of acne).
  • No harmful side effects were noted in clinical studies that measured the outcome of treatments.
  • Patients with acne-prone skin don’t need to comply with strict, daily routines for it to be effective.
  • Sessions are short, lasting 30 minutes each.
  • Pain is minimal and downtime is nil.
  • It is safe to use on all skin tones (as opposed to other lasers, which can be difficult to use on darker skin tones, since they can form pigmentation more easily).
  • It is not secluded to extreme acne sufferers; those with mild acne can be treated with this laser too!
  • It works on long-term, future acne breakouts, as well as current ones.
  • It can be used on both adolescents and adults.

Of course, AviClear™ acne treatments are also highly effective. In clinical studies:

  • 80% of participants noted at least a 50% reduction in acne three months after their last treatment. This number increased to 87% six months after their last treatment.
  • 88% of patients said their skin looked better three months after their last treatment.
  • 90% of patients responded to treatment within six months. Plus, 92% saw results at 12 months.
  • 67% of patients were assessed as clear or almost clear of acne 12 months after their last treatment.

How does the AviClear™ laser work to clear acne?

AviClear laser hand piece - laser for treating acne - available in Surrey Vancouver

AviClear™ uses a 1726 nm wavelength laser beam, which was released in 2022. This beam selectively treats the sebaceous glands in the skin. It does this by being attracted to the unique colour that sebum (i.e. oil) creates in combination with the sebaceous gland. This means that, while destroying sebocytes, surrounding tissues are left untreated, making the laser safe for all skin tones.

Sebaceous glands are the skin’s oil glands. When over productive, these glands are heavily responsible for the production of acne. By treating them with laser energy, the sebaceous glands are regulated so as not to produce as much oil.

When the skin produces less oil, it has fewer opportunities to mix with bacteria and dead skin cells. This then reduces the chances of acne forming in the first place.

After a series of three treatments, AviClear™ begins to show results within a month. In most cases, full results become apparent within 6 months, to at least 12 months. Photographs are taken before each treatment session, and thereafter, to document your progress.

Acne laser therapy not only helps clear existing breakouts; it also helps reduce future breakouts – whether by frequency or severity.

Are AviClear™ treatments painful?

AviClear acne laser treatment in Surrey on the nose close up view

AviClear™ requires no anaesthetic or external pain aversion for treatment. Patients typically handle their sessions well, without taking any breaks.

As with all laser treatments, there can be a feeling of heat as the laser ‘zaps’ at your sebaceous glands. This feeling can also be described as a ‘snapping’ sensation. However, the sensation is mitigated by a sapphire cooling tip at the end of the laser’s hand piece, called AviCool™.

Cooling the skin during treatment helps maintain the skin’s temperature. In turn, this reduces the feeling of pain.

While ice pads are not usually necessary for this treatment, they can be made available if you require them.

Are there side effects with AviClear™? What about downtime?

There are no harmful side effects associated with AviClear™ laser acne treatments. Minor side effects, such as swelling and redness, typically resolve within a few hours to a few days. Ice packs can help to relieve these discomforts.

About half of patients in clinical studies with moderate to severe acne experienced temporary acne flare ups after AviClear™ treatments. Rarer, temporary side effects included skin dryness, skin texture changes, blistering and hyperpigmentation.

All of these side effects resolved on their own, in due time, or with additional post-treatment protocols. The end results were still maintained, despite these side effects.

It is important not to pick at scabs and to follow all pre and post-treatment care instructions to avoid side effects.

This treatment requires no downtime. You can return to normal activities immediately after treatment sessions. However, you will be advised to avoid heavy exercise or ‘hot’ activities, such as sitting in saunas, for at least a day.

You should be diligent to apply sunscreen every 90 minutes during your course of treatment, and thereafter.

AviClear™ is safe for all skin tones.

Pregnant women may not undergo AviClear™ treatments.

Will AviClear™ result in hair loss?

In clinical studies, no patients reported losing hair as a result of these acne laser treatments. For example, men’s beards were not affected.

However, being that the AviClear™ machine uses a laser, the potential for hair loss can’t be eliminated with 100% certainty. Patients should be aware of this before opting to get this treatment.
