Acne scars are the result of active acne and prior to treating any acne it is important to get the acne under control. At BC Laser and SkinCare Clinic, we have have been providing acne and acne scarring treatments from our Surrey clinic, to clients from all over Vancouver, White Rock, Langley, Coquitlam and Delta BC for over 10 years.
There are many types of acne scars and there is no single treatment for acne scars but rather a series of treatments or a combination of acne scar treatments is the best option to give you great results.
There are 3 types of depressed acne scars, Icepick acne scars, Boxcar acne scars and rolling acne scars. Each appears slightly differently on the skin. There are 2 types of raised acne scars, keloids and hypertrophic acne scars. At BC Laser we treat these types of acne scars by using a pulsed dye laser in some cases and by using injections of corticosteriods in other cases to flatten and reduce the acne scar. We also use creams and gels to reduce the acne scar, reduce discomfort and irritation in the area.
Lastly, though not true acne scars the skin where acne once was can be left a darker colour than the surrounding skin. These skin colour changes can be pink or reddish in people with light skin and dark brown in people with darker skin. These spots will eventually fade however there are treatment options available to speed this process. Firstly protect your skin with sunscreen every day. This applies to all people! Sun exposure can make these spots much worse. It is important to use a broad spectrum sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30. An oil free sunscreen such as Alyria’s oil free sunscreen will also help prevent new acne breakouts.
The treatments for these types of “acne scars” is the use of skin lighteners and bleaching creams as well as chemical peels and lasers. At BC Laser we use a variety of skin care to even out pigment across the skin , also known as pigment blending. Products that contain hydroquinone or arbutin are used as well as using tretinoin. The combination of products is usually tailored to the individual needs of the patient. In addition to skin care, we use chemical peels such as the VI Peel, Dermaceutic Spot Peel and laser pigment treatments to reduce the pigmented skin.
