This is a non-clumping, thickening, extending, smudge-resistant black mascara. It includes nourishing ingredients to help strengthen and condition eyelashes (just as we would condition the hair on our head, to make it soft, pliable and healthy).
While it does use a safe polymer to offer water resistant benefits, this mascara mostly uses naturally-derived waxes, such as from plants and beehives (i.e. beeswax). These help to prevent smudging, while also supporting the lashes with ‘lift.’
Now, we would be biased in saying what we’re about to say, but we’ll say it anyway: this mascara is fantastic. Here is what one of our staff members had to say about it:
“This is the best mascara I’ve ever used. I’ve had a long history of dry eye skin, crepey makeup lines and mascara that would ALWAYS smudge. I must use moisturizers on my eye area because it is so dry. But this causes most mascaras to ‘leak’ off of my eye lids and create a strange, ‘slept in your makeup’ look (which I’m not into – but you do you). Some mascaras also made my eyes water. Waterproof mascara made my lashes feel tight, brittle and sticky. Getting it off meant I had to have the right makeup remover on hand. Lashes would come out when I would clean the area. Plus, it still smudged on occasion.
“Then came the Colorescience® black mascara, and it changed everything! It is absolutely non-clumping. It totally extends my lashes out so they look long and dainty. It doesn’t have that ‘extra dry’ effect, and it doesn’t smell like paint. Best of all, the formula doesn’t smudge – not even by the end of the day. It also comes off easily, without harshly rubbing. And, I can’t believe the price – it’s so reasonable for how well it works.”
Many who’ve used this product can tell similar stories of how well it works. It’s common to read reviews about it with words like, “favourite,” “best,” “no clumping,” “easy to remove,” “no flaking,” and “no smudges,” among other similar statements.
A few helpful things to know about this product:
Please note this is not a designated, ‘waterproof mascara.’ It will likely smudge in extreme heat or when swimming.
This tube is large and lasts a decent amount of time. Its wand applicator comes with medium-to-long bristles. They’re not too thin, nor too thick.
Like with most mascaras, apply this product by stroking and wiggling the wand along the underside of your top lashes. Work from the base, to the tip of the lashes.
You can create a more dramatic look with this mascara by applying it on the top of upper lashes, too. To do this, carefully dab the wand on the top lashes, and curl the wand outward. You can use the same motion on the lower eyelid lashes, too.
Use mascara as the last step in your makeup routine, to avoid powders from sticking to your lashes.
Always remove mascara before bed. While this mascara doesn’t feel like it has turned your lashes into plastic, it’s still wise to prevent substance getting in your eyes. Generally, mascara stiffens lashes to extend them outward. That stiffness can lead to cracking if you’re sleeping on your lashes.
This product doesn’t require excessive rubbing, nor special waterproof makeup remover. Use your regular makeup remover formula (such as the biodegradable, Hydrating Cleansing Cloths by Colorescience®). Avoid scrubbing to keep your lashes intact.
Notable skin care ingredients:
This product is full of plant-derived and naturally-based ingredients (alongside some standard synthetic ones). Some of its notable parts include:
Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) wax (Copernicia Cerifera Cera) – a wax from a plant originating in Brazil. It helps to solidify cosmetics while keeping them pliable.
Beeswax (Cera Alba) – a wax made from the flower nectar that bees collect and turn into honeycomb. It’s a natural, renewable product. In cosmetics, it is used to provide multiple benefits, including solidification, smoothing, waterproofing and water-binding.
Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) seed oil – being more of a wax than an oil, this is an ingredient from nature that is known for being an effective moisturizer in cosmetics.
Glycerin – a popular, highly moisturizing ingredient, often found in skin care products.
Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17 – a hydrating keratin (i.e. protein) builder designed to help create fuller, thicker lashes. It is popularly used in eyelash growth products.
Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5, pantothenic acid) – a moisturizing, water-holding ingredient. It helps to make hair supple and shiny. It is commonly used in shampoos and skin care products to prevent dryness and brittleness.
Plus other lash conditioners, moisturizers and solidifiers (i.e. emulsifiers) to help the product ‘stay put’ while protecting and coating hairs. It is coloured with a mineral-based, iron oxide. No paraben preservatives are used.
