Skin Brightening treatments are performed when some has an uneven tone to the skin or dark patches of skin. It is done by lessening the amount of active melanin in the skin. Several skin care products have shown to be effective in skin brightening and combination treatments with lasers are also effective to even out skin tones.
High pigmentation spots such as moles and birthmarks can require the area to be depigmented to match the surrounding skin and in cases of vitiligo, the unaffected skin may be lightened to match the vitiligo spots and give the skin a more even tone. In cases where spot treatment creams are used to lighten the whole face, however how proven to be ineffective. Another area where skin brightening treatments may be used is in the process of genital or anal bleaching where skin creams are used to reduce the dark pigmentation in the genital and perianal areas.
Most skin-lightening treatments, which can reduce or block some amount of melanin production, are aimed at inhibiting tyrosinase. Many treatments use a combination of topical lotions or gels containing melanin-inhibiting ingredients along with a sunscreen, and a prescription retinoid such as tretinoin. Depending on how the skin responds to these treatments, exfoliants — either in the form of topical cosmetic or chemical peels — and lasers may be used. New development using LED systems are also showing good results.
Some skin cosmoceuticals include the use of agents that help to brighten the skin Among these are:
Hydroquinone is a strong inhibitor of melanin production, meaning that it prevents skin from making the substance responsible for skin color.Hydroquinone does not bleach the skin but lightens it, and can only disrupt the synthesis and production of melanin hyperpigmentation. Short term use of hydroquinone is safe but any use of hydroquinone should be supervised by a physician.
Arbutin is an alternative skin lightener that is used in some cosmoceutical preparations.
Other skin brighteners include Kojic acid, Azelaic acid and Vitamin C preparations.
Many of these brighteners are used in chemical peel preparations performed in physician offices under supervision to help brighten the skin .
Both Alpha Hydroxy acid (AHA’s) peels and glycolic peels are used in skin brightening treatments. AHA’s less than 15% in concentration are not thought be effective for skin brightening treatments. Many spa treatments will use low concentrations of AHA’s in their peels.
Alpha hydroxy acid peels (using 50% concentrations or greater) may remove skin discolorations. Only a qualified physician should perform these types of facial peels.
