Below are 4 myths about acne:

Acne Is Just a Teen Problem
The reality: When and how severely a person will get acne is very much genetically determined. While there are many who only experience acne during teenage years, there are tons of people who get adult acne, too. In fact, The International Dermal Institute puts the number at between 40 to 55 percent of adults aged 20 to 40. “It’s more common in adult women than in adult men because of ongoing hormonal fluctuations—though some men certainly experience adult acne as well,” says King. Dirty Skin Causes Acne
Acne is not caused by dirt or uncleanliness, so you can stop blaming yourself. The bacteria that causes acne, p. acnes, is already on your skin, and proliferates in your pores when it feeds on excess oil. Washing your face twice a day is more than enough to reduce bacteria, remove surface oil and help exfoliate dead skin cells. To kill the acne-causing bacteria you need to target it in the pore with benzoyl peroxide. Source: Proactiv

Toothpaste Can Clear It Up
Don’t! “I hate this myth,” says Dr. Nazarian. “Toothpaste is made for teeth. You shouldn’t be putting something like that on your delicate skin — you’ll irritate it.” Even though it is a drying agent that might decrease the size and appearance of your zit, try something more gentle and soothing for your skin. Popping Pimples Will Help Them Go Away Faster
Fact: Popping a pimple may make it seem less noticeable temporarily, but popping can cause it to stay around longer. By squeezing pimples and zits, you can actually push bacteria, dead skin cells, and oil further into the skin, causing more swelling and redness — and sometimes causing a red or brown mark or scar to form. Sometimes marks can last for many months and true scars (dents and pits) will last forever. Source: KidsHealth
