That is a big question that would take a volume to write. In short, if you are a man then the two treatments are finasteride (Propecia) and minoxidil (Rogaine). If you are a woman, then it is only the latter. Finasteride and minoxidil work through two different pathways so they are in fact synergistic with one another. The big problem is that if you stop using them over a period of years, you lose everything you gained during that time. Also, they take a few months to start working. If you are already pretty bald, the products don’t work well. They are for early to moderate hair loss when hairs are becoming “miniaturized” meaning that they are going from thick to thin wispy hairs (called vellus) before they become gone. The medications work to take some of these vellus hairs and convert them back to a thicker so-called “terminal” hair that we have in youth. They also slow down the loss of vellus hairs to no hairs.
