Laugh Lines are not funny: Erase them with Juvederm!

Over time, the loss of hyaluronic acid can lead to laugh lines forming around the mouth. Reducing the appearance of these lines used to mean undergoing surgery, but that’s no longer necessary thanks to a treatment known as Juvederm®. This is an injectable filler that can effectively reduce the appearance of these lines with only one outpatient treatment.

 What is Juvederm®?

Juvederm® is an injectable filler containing cross-linked hyaluronic acid, which is then formed into a gel. This substance mimics natural hyaluronic acid, and has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of wrinkles in the mouth area.

How is Juvederm® Administered?

During a consultation, Dr. Shah will determine which areas of the face should be treated in order to produce the results that are desired. In doing so, the doctor will also be able to decide how much of this product will be needed. The procedure can sometimes be performed on the same day as a consultation in many cases. It takes only a few minutes to prepare a syringe with exactly the right amount of Juvederm®, and then inject this substance into deep layers of skin tissue. This procedure can even be performed on your lunch hour, since there is no downtime required afterwards.

This gel-like substance goes to work immediately, plumping and firming the skin while also providing a very natural appearance. The effects of Juvederm® can be expected to last for approximately one year, after which time an individual can easily undergo another injection.

Moderate Side Effects Possible

Since cross-linked hyaluronic acid closely mimics natural hyaluronic acid, there are normally few side effects noticed with this procedure. The most common side effects are relatively mild ones that include light swelling, bruising or tenderness near the injection site. These symptoms normally go away within a day or two without further treatment. In some cases, small lumps may appear underneath the skin, and these normally go away within one week. Individual side effects may vary from one person to the next, and can even be different on second and subsequent treatments than they were on the first.

Although it is safe, Juvederm® injections should not be performed on pregnant or nursing mothers. Likewise, those who have previously suffered an allergic reaction to any type of dermal filler should discuss this fact with Dr. Shah beforehand.
