At your first appointment for mole removal, Dr. Shah will assess your mole or moles to better determine what course of action should be taken. Most moles are harmless and can therefore be removed by a variety of methods. In cases where the moles are suspicious , Dr. Shah may biopsy the mole, removing it completely and sending it for analysis or he may refer you to a specialist.
There are a number of methods for mole removal including cutting out the moles, laser mole removal and finally removing the moles by using a Hyfrecator.
Laser Mole removal involves using a laser to target the pigment in the moles. The moles are then broken up and absorbed by the body during the healing process. The laser seals blood vessels and so no sutures or stitches are required.
Good candidates for laser mole removal are small moles, skin tags, new and flat moles. Moles, which may not be suitable for laser mole removal, are raised moles, uneven and irregular moles. The laser may still be used to “cut” these moles out completely.
What to expect after laser mole removal
After laser mole removal the treated area may appear to darken or get redder. The mole will form a scab will fall off within a few weeks. An antibiotic cream may be recommended and healing will take place over the coming month and it is important to remember to use sunscreen following the procedure.
How many treatments will I need?
Typically the number of sessions for laser mole removal may vary from 1-3 sessions depending on the number of moles treated, size and so on. In certain cases, a touch up may be needed following the original treatment to remove any last remaining pigment.
